Presenter in Macintosh OS

MAC OS X is a major revision to the Macintosh operating system. Not only does it add and update features, but in many cases it completely changes the way tasks are done. With a slick new look called “Aqua” and with preemptive multitasking and protected memory that make the computer work more quickly and reliably, Mac OS X is like a breath of fresh air for Macintosh users.

Some Challenges faced by developers in porting Presenter on Macintosh operating system and means by which they were overcome :
  • Decision has to be made between “Carbon” and “Cocoa”. Finally Presenter is released in Carbon on Mac OS X - The decision to port Presenter on Carbon environment was taken as in Cocoa we have to completely change the Presenter source code whereas in Carbon we have to only change the obsolete API’s and add some extra code.
  • Creation of a new file and accessing a file on Mac OS X which was overcome by using the exposed file handling API’s.
  • Implementation of HFS+ was a challenge because HFS+ is case-insensitive but case-preserving, unlike most implementations of UNIX, which are always case-sensitive- While porting from Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X there was a complete change in the file system. So we have implemented the new file system for file navigation and file handling using Carbon API’s.
  • Some commonly used data structures in Carbon are not opaque - meaning their internal structure is hidden. Directly referencing fields within these structures is no longer allowed, and hence resulted in a compile time error- For this Carbon has exposed API’s to reference such data structures. To resolve this issue we have used Carbon API’s instead of directly referencing such data structures.
  • Conversion of file path from Mac format to BSD format posed a challenge, since no direct API is provided in Carbon for the conversion- We overcame this problem by writing a function which converts file path in Mac format to BSD format.
  • Implementation of pthread_t structure based on Mac OS X format- In Mac OS X in pthread_t structure some new members are added which needs to be populated for proper functioning. We have assigned proper values to all these required members of the pthread_t structure.

HCL features in cover story of Forbes magazine
HCL was India's first computer company. Its low-profile global services arm wants to have more skin in clients' games.to transform and take on the challenges of the future.” said Shiv Nadar, Founder HCL.

For eight-year-old HCL technologies, the quietest of India's outsourcing tigers, relationships have always been key. Like its rivals, HCL is typically in the background but intricately tied to a name-brand company's processes. Founder Shiv Nadar insists on that. That's been enough to make HCL the fifth-largest IT services outfit in India, though barely recognized internationally, outside of its niche. The stock is not traded beyond India, and it's held for the most part--68%--by Nadar.

But the company near New Delhi, which employs over 40,000 people across 17 countries, is making its presence felt. A report last November by IDC, a Boston-area research firm, acknowledged as much: "Though it hasn't reached the size of an Infosys or Wipro and though it hasn't received the hype of a Salesforce.com or Google we believe that HCL may very well be one of the contenders to lead the it services world of the very near future."
