Widget is a term obtained from the words "window" and "gadget". It can be defined as a basic building block for GUI (graphical user interface), which helps the user in interacting with the application and operating system. The function of widgets is mainly to display information and invite the user to act in a number of ways. Some of the examples of widgets are buttons, dialog boxes, pop-up windows, icons, scroll bars, selection boxes, windows, etc.
Widget is also used to refer for programs which are written for making graphic widgets in the GUI look and perform in a particular way, depending on what action the user will take while interacting with the GUI.
